Spaces Shape How People Feel

For women and families starting over, the environment around them matters. A room that feels safe, intentional, meant for them. That’s where rebuilding begins. We partner with the organizations serving them to create exactly those spaces.

Who We Are

Design That Serves Others

Joy Street Initiative is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that transforms spaces in shelters, transitional homes, and recovery facilities serving women and families. We believe the places where people are starting over should be designed with the same care and intention as any other space. Powered by Joy Street Design, a national interior design studio, we bring professional design expertise, vendor partnerships, and funding to every project so nonprofit partners never have to compromise.

Who We Serve

Partners in Transition

We partner with nonprofits serving women and families in transition, including shelters, transitional homes, recovery spaces, advocacy assistance, and educational support programs. These are places where some of life’s most vulnerable moments happen.
A woman leaving everything behind. A mother starting over with her children.

These moments deserve spaces that were designed with them in mind. The organizations pouring everything into these families shouldn’t have to figure out how to make that happen on their own.

We make sure they don't. The result: environments where dignity is built in, staff feel proud to work, and residents walk into a room that finally tells them you matter here.

How we work

Two Pathways, One Standard of Care

Joy Street Initiative extends its mission through two pathways – Nonprofit-In-Residence and Joy Drops – each rooted in the same commitment to dignity, intentional design, and partnership.

Nonprofit-in-Residence

Our long-term designpartnership, room by room.

We partner with nonprofits for sustained, multi-project relationships. Rather than a single renovation, we become their ongoing design partner, transforming common spaces, residential rooms, and service environments over time. This model allows us to build trust, understand their community deeply, and create lasting change within a single organization.

What this looks like:

  • An ongoing partnership between Joy Street Initiative and a nonprofit partner.
  • Multiple spaces transformed within the same organization – kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, common areas.
  • Deep collaboration with staff and, when appropriate, the residents themselves.
  • Shared storytelling that honors the organization’s mission and the people at the center of it.

Joy Drops

Same care, Smaller CanvassQuarterly design interventions that let us extend our reach beyond sustained partnerships. Each one is a focused moment of care – a chance to show up for a space, a community, or a person who needs it.

Joy Drops might look like:

  • A room refresh for an organization that isn’t ready to become our Nonprofit-in-Residence.
  • A space transformation for a community member nominated for how they show up for others.
  • A collaboration with an organization that celebrates everyday heroes.
  • A focused transformation day led by skilled tradespeople.

Joy Drops are defined by intention and a belief that thoughtful design, at any scale, communicates dignity and worth.

why partner with us

This Is Different

The organizations doing the hardest work in our communities often have the least support for the spaces around them. Staff make do. Residents adjust. The environment becomes the thing everyone works around instead of something that works for them.

We change that. Joy Street Initiative is a design partner, not a volunteer makeover project. We handle the project so your team doesn’t have to. We bring the vendors, the expertise, and the vision. You stay focused on the people you serve.

When we’re done, staff feel proud of where they work. Residents feel valued from the moment they walk in. The space finally reflects the care that was always happening inside it.

next steps

Every space we transform starts with someone saying yes.

Become a Nonprofit Partner

Whether you're ready for a sustained partnership or a single Joy Drop, we'd love to hear your story. Tell us about your organization, the people you serve, and the spaces they come home to. Every partnership starts with a conversation.

Become a Vendor or Trade Partner

We're always looking for skilled tradespeople and vendors willing to donate time, materials, or services. If you're a contractor, painter, electrician, furniture supplier, or manufacturer who wants to put your work toward something meaningful, we'd love to connect.

Become a Donor

Every dollar goes directly toward transforming spaces for women and families in transition. Your generosity funds the materials, the labor, and the moments where someone walks into a room and finally feels seen.
